Victoria Cureton-Favager BSc (Hons), MSc Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist, Advanced Sensory Integration Practitioner, Occupational Therapy Lecturer and Mentor

A HCPC registered Children's Occupational Therapist and Advanced Sensory Integration Practitioner in the West Yorkshire area. I qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 2005 and completed a Masters degree in 2015 in Professional Health and Social Care Studies. I registered as a Sensory Integration Practitioner in 2019 and completed an MSc in Advanced Practice in Sensory Integration at Sheffield Hallam University in 2023. I work with children with a range of conditions and needs and have a clinical interest in Autism Spectrum Condition and Developmental Trauma.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR ASSESSMENT

I will visit you and your child at home and/or school to complete a thorough sensory integration assessment. Standardised assessments, clinical observations and norm based questionnaires are used to gather sensory integration data. I assess how sensory integration difficulties impact your child's development, function, participation and emotional regulation. Clinical data is then analysed and a report is written to summarise assessed needs and make recommendations for provision.

COMPREHENSIVE SENSORY INTEGRATION ASSESSMENT

Sensory integration assessments involve gathering information from parents/carers and school about how a child manages at home and school with activities of daily living. Sensory questionnaires are used to gather information about how your child reacts and makes use of sensory stimuli at home and school. Your child will then be asked to copy the therapist and complete structured clinical observations (only if the child is able to access this level of assessment). Other games and activities will be used to complete your child's sensory integration assessment.

SCHOOL CONSULTATION SESSION

Consultations aim to facilitate collaboration between Occupational Therapy, school and parents to discuss participation challenges and your child's strengths. We discuss and analyse the function of behaviours and identify occupational performance and sensory needs. Goals and strategies are then developed in collaboration with parents and school.

REPORT WRITING FOR EDUCATION, HEALTH AND CARE PLANS (EHCP)

A report will be written following assessment to include recommendations for educational provision.

School Children

CHILDREN'S OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY INTERVENTION

Occupational Therapy intervention sessions will address individual functional goals. Goals may focus on developing independence skills with dressing, feeding or toileting. They may focus on functional fine or gross motor skills such as handwriting, using scissors, a ruler or riding a bike or scooter.
For children with developmental trauma who have missed out on early interaction and movement opportunities this therapy may focus on building foundation sensory systems in order to develop functional skills and regulation. 
For children with Autism Spectrum Condition, therapy may focus on developing self regulation skills, functional and motor skills.
